Meta paused its new ad terms. Check what its AI already changes in your ads

The terms that would make you answer for Meta’s AI edits are on hold. The AI features that make those edits are already switched on. Here is the ten-minute check.

Pixel Caption cover: an ad card with a sparkle over its text and a pause badge. Meta paused its terms. Its AI edits are still on.

What happened in October

On 8 October, Meta announced new Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms, due to start on 30 October. Coverage focused on two points: advertisers would be responsible for what Meta’s AI tools create or change in their ads, and Meta would gain wide rights to use content for its AI services.

Publishers and advertisers pushed back, and complaints reached competition regulators in the EU and the UK. On 23 October, Meta moved the start date to 20 November. On 28 October, it went further and delayed the rollout with no fixed date. Until then, the current terms apply.

What the delay doesn’t change

The terms are paused. The AI features are not. If Meta’s tools edit your ad today, your customer still sees that edit under your brand name.

Three things that may already be on in your account

Meta has been turning on AI features by default through the year. These are the three we check first in every account we take over.

FeatureWhat it can do to your ad
Advantage+ creative enhancementsRewrite your text, add variations, change brightness or crop, add music, or build a short video from your images.
Product browsingSend a tap to a product page inside Facebook or Instagram instead of your store. Meta said it would switch this on for existing ads from 28 October unless you opted out.
Threads placementShow your ad in the Threads feed. It is on by default when you run a campaign in Ads Manager.

None of these is bad by default. Meta says product browsing brings about 3% more conversions on average. That is Meta’s figure, and it’s an average across all advertisers, so test it on your own account before you trust it.

The ten-minute check

  • Open three of your top-spending live ads and preview them in every placement. Read the text as a buyer would. Is anything there you didn’t write?
  • In the ad’s Advantage+ creative settings, keep the enhancements you’ve tested and turn off the ones you haven’t.
  • Add restricted words in your brand settings: competitor names, words your category can’t use (“cure”, “guaranteed”), and discount claims you don’t offer.
  • Check the destination of each ad. If product browsing is on, a tap may never reach your store, so your Pixel won’t see the visit.
  • Look at the placement breakdown for the last 7 days. If Threads is taking spend, compare its cost per purchase with your other placements before deciding.

Why a founder should care

A rewritten headline that promises “free delivery” when you charge for COD becomes a support problem, and sometimes a refund. A product page inside Instagram can work well for impulse buys, but it also means fewer people land on your store, join your list or see your bundles.

You don’t need to switch every AI feature off. You need to know which ones are on, and to have tested the ones you keep.
